Ideas to transform a patio into an amazing outdoor living room.
As you look outside to your backyard and notice the nondescript slab of cement that masquerades as an outdoor patio you might be saying, “Yeah, right.”
But worry not. You can claim a corner of your yard as your outdoor living room and create a new place to entertain and enjoy time with your friends and family—without a lot of money.
Let’s define the space.
Does your patio side up against a wall of the house? If you so, you’re off to a great start. If you need to define your space, you can always place a row of potted trees to act as a wall.
Look up above you.
Any living room needs some sort of a roof. Maybe it’s a pergola with green vines, or a large canvas sailcloth or even a series of oversized outdoor umbrellas.
Jumpstart some conversation.
To engage in meaningful, and leisurely conversation, people need places to sit that are comfortable. A love seat, a rocking chair or even a swing all offer the opportunity to hang out with friends or pass the afternoon with a good book. Be sure to include a side table so there’s a convenient place for the pitcher of ice tea or margaritas.
Stand your ground.
Look down below you. You can add a wonderful woven or rag rug to help define your new living space. Or you can just go ahead and paint a carpet pattern on the cement or wood floor of your outdoor living room.
It all centers on eating.
If there’s room, invest in a table and chairs so you can enjoy dining al fresco. Somehow, everything tastes better when it’s eaten outside. A beautiful cloth can dress up the simplest of tables
Don’t be shy with color.
You’re outside with the blue sky as a backdrop. So don’t be hesitant about using strong doses of color. Inject a multitude of shades with potted flowers. Drape a throw blanked on the back of a love seat and accent the colors with throw pillows. And go ahead and paint your furniture bold shades.
Don’t wait for a special occasion.
Your outdoor living room is the perfect way to make a special occasion out of any day. So walk out your back door, take a seat and kick back. You’re on vacation!
